Jury Statement – Franz Grabner Prize
Four young adults. They are dancers, opera lovers, poets, activists, waitstaff, athletes. They live independently, alone or with partners, and have big plans for their lives – careers, marriage, family. And they have Down syndrome. Evelyne Faye also received this ‘diagnosis’ after the birth of her daughter, she recounts at the beginning, before posing a question: ‘What does it mean for your pursuit of happiness?’ We see her gaze at her joyful child, filled with confidence that this life will be self-determined. This hope is convincingly grounded in the empathetic and witty portraits of the four protagonists.
Down syndrome recedes into the background of the narrative. Instead, we see the everyday lives, interests, actions, worries, and joys of young people – and we see them in a world where their uniqueness has become normal. In an interview on the film’s website, the filmmaker says she made the film as a love letter to her daughter, rather than a diary like the ones she created for her other children as they grew up. But beyond sharing this love, the letter gives its recipient courage for a life free of fear and doubt, through the example of people who have already achieved it.
The optimism and fierce determination to live life on one’s own terms resonate with the audience – and inspire even those who don’t face the same resistance and prejudice on their own journey.
